Film Screening: New Muslim Cool

Please join us for a screening of the documentary film, New Muslim Cool followed by a panel discussion with the film’s star (Hamza Pérez), a co-producer (Kauthar Umar), and a scholar of U.S. Latina/o Muslims (Hjamil Martínez-Vázquez).

New Muslim Cool tells the story of Puerto Rican Muslim rapper Hamza Pérez who left his life as a drug dealer when he converted to Islam. He moved from Massachusetts to Pittsburgh to start a new religious community and to spread his message of faith to other urban youth through his hip-hop music.

Kauthar Umar is an Albany-based writer and photographer whose work has appeared in YM and Essence. Her current photographic series focuses upon urban American Muslim youth. Hjamil Martínez-Vázquez is the author of the only scholarly monograph on U.S. Latin@ Muslims: Latina/o y Musulmán: The Construction of Latina/o Identity among Latina/o Muslims in the United States.
